Hash Generator

Generate SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512 digests locally with Web Crypto.

About Hash Generator

A cryptographic hash maps input bytes to a fixed-size digest. Developers use hashes for checksums and integrity comparisons; this page uses Web Crypto to calculate SHA digests locally from UTF-8 text.

A digest is not encryption and cannot be reversed to retrieve the original text. SHA-1 is included for compatibility but is not recommended for collision-resistant security decisions; choose SHA-256 or stronger for new integrity workflows and use a password-hashing algorithm for passwords.

How to use this tool

Enter the text, select a SHA algorithm, and generate the digest. The output is hexadecimal; empty input is rejected to make accidental hashing explicit.

Frequently asked questions

Does a hash encrypt my text?

No. Hashing is a one-way digest operation, not encryption. It does not provide a way to recover the original input.

Which algorithm should I choose?

SHA-256 is a widely supported general-purpose choice. SHA-384 and SHA-512 are also available; SHA-1 is provided for legacy compatibility and should not be used for security-sensitive collision resistance.

Should I use this to hash passwords?

No. Password storage should use a dedicated, slow password-hashing algorithm such as Argon2id, scrypt, bcrypt, or PBKDF2 with a unique salt and appropriate parameters.
